Thelma Plum - "Gold" (Chet Faker cover)

Image
Via Courier Mail So I'm late to the game on this one - like the grounds crew has already finished their job, packed up, and has cracked a beer at home late - but figured what the heck, a good song is a good song right? The Brisbane artist absolutely kills Chet Faker's "Gold" during this round of Triple J's Like a Version. Faker's Built on Glass was easily one of the records on heaviest rotation for me this past year, so praise for Faker duplication does not come easily.Plum adds so many layers, however, really giving the track more the feel of a stepchild - who becomes the star of the family -rather than bastard son. Might just be listening to Plum's take from here on out whenever Built on Glass hits track five. Be sure to check out her first EP, Rosie , and her latest, Monsters . This find comes via Stereofox .

Sorcha Richardson - "Petrol Station"

Image
It's been a great week for new releases and the one I'm most excited about thus far is "Petrol Station" from Sorcha Richardson . There are a few groups that have been standbys for me since Bochi Crew started in 2012 and Sorcha Richardson is certainly one of them. The New York based Irish musician has developed tremendously through her solo work and work with CON VOS . In her most recent effort, the stripped down acoustic has made way for a synth heavy, thumping tune. The best part? Richardson's lyrics still linger on just as hauntingly as they always have. Take the line: "the grass stains on my shoes/and my rib cage is bruised/and that side of love you tasted/find that stuff you chase." It hits just as hard as lines on Sleep will set me free . Richardson has a knack for not only great lyricism, but for the even more important delivery. "Petrol Station" sees its release on May 26th followed by a number of summer shows. Catch her May 23 at H...

A/S/L - "3934 km"

Image
Photo via XLR8R Sunday's track comes via XLR8R and is one to start the week with. "3934 km" from producer A/S/L comes ahead of his EP, Away from you . The title of the track really got me wondering - especially because I tend to spend hours pouring over maps. A/S/L is based out of LA so figured why not throw a point down on the map and see what is 3934 km away. Sure enough, you head about that distance east and you hit NYC. Take Horace Greeley's advice and go west my son, you hit Hawaii. Personally, I'll take the warmth of "3934 km" and make a bid for a Hawaii, especially after digging out from a few inches of snow this weekend. The only thing making "3934 km" anymore listenable, is that its free. Warm listening and enjoy a bonus track from Abhi//Dijon

Under Two Palms - "Under Two Palms"

Image
Photo Courtsey Deviant Art We're going to keep the nostalgia coming for now and what says nostalgia like fuzzy lo-fi. Today's track comes from Under Two Palms and can't help but draw a comparison to Neon Indian here. The track is self-pegged by Under Two Palms as #vaporwave which I can only hope gains some cache because I would love to throw around that term on a regular basis. The thing that got me into music blogging in the first place was finding out the absurd backstories that most groups seem to have. Unfortunately, Under Two Palms has done an excellent job staying under the radar so we'll have to leave it at that. Track comes via Cocaine Jesus which if ya want more of the same, you now know where to find it. Enjoy and give these guys some love!

Made In Heights - "Slow Burn"

Image
My close friends have likely gotten sick of me lamenting the fall of nu-disco. It was such a strange phenomena, gathering momentum at an exponential rate and then evaporating like steam with little to show for it other than the nostalgia it was born out of. Thankfully, the quickly up and coming Made In Heights are, at least temporarily, bringing some nu-disco back to the headphones - "Slow Burn" almost takes you back to La Roux's "Bulletproof." Not new by any means, Sabzi and Kelsey Bulkin have been at it for awhile with a slew of singles punctuating this past year. As a friend described it, "Slow Burn" has everything you need for a lazy sunny Sunday drive. The bouncing synths add a certain level of absurdity which is counter-acted by Belkin's whispy vocals that keep the suspension in check. With "Slow Burn" and "Forgiveness", Made In Heights' upcoming album, Without My Enemy What Would I do looks like a continued upwar...

Noosa - Wonderland

Image
Find Noosa Facebook Twitter Soundcloud Youtube Fairy Pop. That's how Long Island's Noosa describes her sound. Her debut LP produced in collaboration with Mickey Valen , Wonderland certainly fits the bill and focuses on a desire for new beginnings and who knows, maybe even fairy tale endings. One of my favorite quotes, and one I have been coming back to recently, reads "Pain or love or danger makes you real again." This quip from Kerouac lends itself to Wonderland . Wonderland elaborates at length on the difficulties of departure. The LP emerged out of Noosa's long-desired departure from New York and the accompanying unbridled optimism about what awaited her in the West. "Begin Again" and "Golden One" elude to inner-deliberations and struggles that accompany new beginnings. "Begin Again," the third track on the LP builds through a frenzy of keys and optimism: "I believe in storybook tells, If there’s n...

Bochi Revival

Image
If you've been paying any attention, the last time I posted was back on November 13, 2013. With a grueling fall semester and more of a fuck everything ancillary mindset this spring, the blog took a hit. Well, rather, it stopped functioning all together. Now, with college behind me and a seemingly endless expanse opening up in front of me, it is time for Bochi to come back into my life in a big way. I can't help feeling that this summer will be a time of tremendous growth both for myself and the blog. The next few weeks will see me slowly making my way westward (shout out to Horace Greeley) to Denver where I will be setting up shop with Jeune Lafitte . In the spirit of departures and what it means to progress, I felt it would be fitting to focus on tracks encapsulating this theme: gain with absence, adaptation with loss and ultimately advancement.

Frank Ocean - "Lost" (Trails and Ways cover)

Image
If you have spent any time around me in the past year you know I often champion the cause of Oakland's Trails and Ways . Their newest is a thoughtful bossa nova inspired cover of Frank Ocean's "Lost." Never afraid to incorporate something unconventional, TW made the song their own, crooning the opening and closing verse in Portugese. This release comes on the heels of Trilingual , an EP that surely will make many best of lists come December. If Trails and Ways passes your way it is certainly a concert not to be missed. I caught the group mid-July at the Bunk Bar in Portland and loved every moment of it, particularly some of their unreleased material. All of this goes to show that Trails and Ways continues to be an outfit to watch into the future.

John Legend - "All of Me" (De Hofnar Bootleg)

Image
There are just some songs that you have to listen to an unreasonable number of times after that first listen. The De Hofnar bootleg of John Legend's, "All of Me" is such a track. De Hofnar presents a melange of the signature sounds emerging from producers in the past year, think Cyril Hahn, Le Youth, and Klingande. As is the case with many of these artists, De Hofnar keeps a low profile. Only receiving scant coverage from other blogs and maintaining a website simply bearing his graphic logo and booking information, De Hofnar maintains a low web presence. About all we know is that the man behind the moniker hails from Tilburg, Netherlands and goes by the name Jeroen Maas. Something that happens all too often in these downtempo edits is an absence in progression. Maas' bootleg progresses seamlessly, while allowing the Legend's verses the space and focus they are do. Most notable is the final build as De Hofnar hones in on Legend's lyrics: "Love your cu...

Simply Put III

Image
The past couple of weeks have been constantly in flux between emotional highs and lows but keeping me grounded has been the renewed interest in music and writing. However, my next couple of weeks will receive a lift with Grieves passing through Iowa City at the Blue Moose Taps Room. Look for the interview in the coming two weeks. Fort Frances will also be passing through Grinnell and doing an acoustic in-studio. Enough about my life. In accordance with the aim of the Simply Put feature, simply music with little commentary, let's jump into this weeks tracks without further adieu.

It's About that Time... Simply Put

Image
It has been a long long time, about two months now since my last post. As expected, this semester has gotten off to a pretty gnarly and a pretty hectic start. After nearly two years of being stuck in school with courses I didn't enjoy, things finally broke for the better. I landed myself in a stellar seminar and my senior thesis is proving to be equally stellar. Admittedly I have not checked the Bochi Crew inbox in two months now so my musical tastes as of late have been dictated solely by other blogs versus what y'all send me. Given that there has been a parting of the clouds and I should have some free time in my schedule look for regular posting on Bochi again. If you haven't already check out the blog I where most of my energy is focused nowadays over at good old college radio station . Below are a sampling of some tracks that have blowing out the headphones thus far this semester. Keep checking back, I'll post more I promise!

Gone Fishing

Image
During the past couple of weeks I have been blissfully unaware of most goings on in regards to music. It has been weeks since I last wrote a post. It was not planned but I have decided to take an indefinite haitus from blogging and will literally be taking some time off to go fishing in the coming weeks. What initially started as short break over independence day weekend grew into what has become a much needed step back to combat burnout. The down trodden economy gave me a break and threw me a job and internship which has taken up a considerable amount of my time and I cannot say I have felt all that motivated to post at the end of the day. Bochi Crew came to be as a means to share music amongst friends and out of a curiosity to understand what it was to run a music blog. Without a doubt the experience has been a positive one with no regrets. It just becomes increasingly difficult to rationalize investing as much time as a professional into a blog I run merely for the fun of it. ...

Frame/Frame

Image
Like Ben, I am somewhat constrained by time this summer.  I have wanted to post Frame/Frame for the past couple weeks, but really haven't had an opportunity. I ended up seeing Frame/Frame last month at the Humming Tree, a bar in one of the trendier neighborhoods of Bangalore.  I ended up coming away really impressed.  Frame/Frame's set was well suited to the venue, the crowd got into it, and I ended up having a excellent first concert experience in India. I ended up posting Feather and Polar from Frame/Frame's SoundCloud , but I enjoy all of his music and definitely recommend you check it out.

Misun - Summer Bootlegs

Image
If anything can ring in the summer, it is a well put together mixtape. Misun's Summer Bootlegs mixtape mixed by Cousin Cole and Nacey is befitting of all that is great about the summer: heat, tropical weather, cold drinks in hand, beach chairs, coolers, floating in the pool, and of course BBQ. The mixtape hits it hard from the get go with the feel-good track, "Promise Me." The back key on my ipod I am sure has lost some functionality based on the sheer number of times I have restarted "Promise Me" ipon its completion. Another standout, well they are all really standouts, is "Met You." It boasts all the upbeat positive vibes similarly encapsulated in Mase's "Welcome Back." Enjoy the fourth and get this one cranking to ensure good vibes throughout the day, it is a free download so there is no excuse not to.

Small Pools - "Dreaming" (The Chainsmokers Remix)

Image
Aged nine months, The Chainsmokers are certainly an aural brew that gets better with age. The NYC duo have brought to the fore an enthralling synthesis of indie and EDM. The latest to make the rounds of the blogosphere is a remix of “Dreaming” from Small Pools. The original, deemed by Drew and Alex to be a summer anthem replete with the smells of fresh cut grass and afternoons in the sun, sees these vibes amplified with the rehash. A bit of Felix Cartel and maybe even some Mount Kimbie can be heard in the remix but it all blends together in a whole different way. As their sound continues to show signs of maturity it sure seems like the duo haven't, a good thing for sure. Not to say Drew and Alex are immature, but they bring a certain absurdity, matching vibrant music with vibrant personalities. You never know what you will get from these guys, especially in the press releases. Along with “Dreaming,” a day in the life of The Chainsmokers was sent along. Scope it below....

Simply Put

Image
A downside to not having this blog be my only focus is that a lot of great bands and new tracks get shafted simply because of time constraints. If I write a post I want to ensure that I have the time to devote myself to the artists back story and any quirks and travails that have landed them where they are. Groups I post put a tremendous amount of time into their music so why shouldn't I. The past couple of weeks have left my mind in perpetual somersaults debating if there was a way to balance minimal commentary and songs that deserve a post. I have come to the conclusion though that some press is better than none. Even if I can't give these bands the time of day they deserve with a full write-up, there is no harm in posting them as part of a compilation. This marks the beginning of a new feature on Bochi Crew called "Simply Put." Look for it each week and unlike our Postcards feature there won't be a set number featured each week. It will be a mix of subm...

Catching up with Shelf Nunny [Interview]

Image
Photo Credit: Sketch at left done by Shelf Nunny, rest of collage by Bochi Crew We had the chance to catch up this week with Christian Gunning, otherwise known as Shelf Nunny about his newest release, Dream Album . To start we asked some simple either or questions that can illuminate a lot about a man. They are as follows: Beyonce or Rihanna? Shelf Nunny : "Obviously Beyonce. It's not only girls that love beyonce MMMk? and plus, Rihanna's just got way to big of a forehead for me to take her seriously" Norcal or SoCal? SN : "Norcal's a lot less stressful then Socal." Postcards XV

Image
The postcard featured above comes from a talented Denver-based artist. The winner for our signed Olafur Arnalds giveaway won with a submission of another card by the same artist. The above is my personal favorite but many more can be found here on Mountains versus Plains ! The aim of the Postcards feature is to promote the best music that we have received in the past week in one post. Each Postcard gives a glimpse of different set of genres and artists form different pockets of the globe. The list will be capped at four, allowing for a more in-depth look at each featured artist. If you want to be featured on Postcards send Bochi Crew your music at bochicrew@gmail.com and follow us @BochiCrew. Colo Colo Bare with me here in case my info on COLO COLO is not spot-on, the press release is in French. OMG OMG OMG. That is what I am left with in trying to get across my enthusiasm for "Follow Me Down" from Colo Colo. I had some work to do earlier this afternoon and th...

Trails and Ways - Trilingual EP [MP3]

Image
Trails and Ways released their much anticipated EP Trilingual via Non•Market Records on June 11th. The entire EP plays through brilliantly and has already secured a place in my top ten EPs of the year. The EP includes all of their standout tracks: Como Te Vas, Nunca, Tereza, Border Crosser, and Mtn Tune. The last single to be released, "Tereza" sees its roots in "the desolate coast of northeastern Brazil. Sung by Emma Oppen, the track started from playing Tom Jobim chords over a Radio Dept. beat." An emerging theme in any Trails and Ways release has been the chronicling of some far off land. In support of Trilingual, the Oakland group has announced a set out on a nationwide tour. You can find the tour dates here! . You can also pick up Trilingual on iTunes and "Tereza" for free on Soundcloud.

Ciara Friday

Image
For no other reason than I just really am feeling Ciara remixes right now I proclaim today Ciara Friday. Though I can't say I have given much of attention to Ciara since Middle School dances where "1,2 Step" was THE song to get down to. This morning, well afternoon now, I have been particularly enamored with remixes of "Body Party." I came across Sliink X Nadus Jersey Club remix through the related tracks feature of soundcloud and the great search began from there. I would love for Le Youth to rehash "Body Party" as I think he could do a tremendous job with it. In addition to the Sliink X Nadus Jersey Shore remix enjoy the Figgy Remix as well as a remix from a friend of a friend, Tokyo-based Cleindl . These tracks are best served cold. 20 minute prep time and then bliss.
